so inspired by king tut

today we FINALLY made it over to san francisco to see the king tutankhamun exhibit at the de young. i saw a similar tut exhibit when i was 9 years old in memphis, tennessee, and the striking images that i saw that day in 1981 have stuck with me all these years as "amazing things to see."

today did not disappoint. to stand in front of something older than 3,000 years old is mind-blowing. the fact that artisans were glazing in brilliant turquoise and carving intricate designs and hammering out gold scarabs in unbelievable. i feel like these people were much more connected with what is than our contemporary society will ever be.

because gabe, our oldest, is nine (the age when tut started his rule) it was really fun to see the connections that were made between tut and himself. the bust carved out of wood of tut was about gabe's size. the chair that is believed to be tut's first throne (gorgeous and inlayed with ebony and ivory) was just gabe's size. i don't think gabe is ready to be the ruler of one of the most powerful empires in history, that's for sure. i just hope that he remembered to brush his teeth tonight:)
